In his lifetime Timothy Leary was a famous author, lecturer and revolutionary. As a young man he pursued a career in psychology and then later went on to become a controversial figure in the counterculture movement of the 1960s. He is the most well-known advocate for psychedelic drugs, specifically LSD, which were used during his experiments with consciousness. He was labelled as one of America's leading intellectuals and political radicals of the 1950s-1970s period, yet many people struggle to find new things to say about him after all these years. This piece will explore current theories about Leary from notable sources such as The New York Times and Rolling Stone magazine covering various aspects of his life from biography to politics. In the early 1950s, Timothy Leary started his journey to become a psychologist. While a student at the University of Alabama, he played American football as a quarterback and even made it into the minor leagues. He then went on to spend two years in Korea as a sergeant in US military intelligence which fuelled his interest in psychology even more after witnessing the human suffering that occurs during war. Following his return from Korea, Leary attended graduate school at University of California where he met fellow psychologists Richard Alpert and Ralph Metzner. The three men later travelled to Mexico to experiment with psychedelics such as psilocybin mushrooms and LSD. They found that the psychedelic experiences were powerful and could be beneficial to individuals; it was this belief that stirred Leary to pursue his PhD in clinical psychology at Harvard University. After earning his degree, Leary became a psychologist at Harvard where he conducted experiments using hallucinogens LSD and psilocybin. While many people look back at the 60s with dismay, he looked back on it with immense fondness. He said that this was a time when "people were trying to wake up from the illusions of a thousand-year-old culture." He went on to say that one of the things he was most proud of in his life was the work he did in helping people awaken from their dogmas in thinking. In the 1960s, Leary went on to become a lecturer at Harvard University. He was invited to deliver a lecture on Nietzsche which was met with both acclaim and fierce opposition from Harvard students. He then became a lecturer at a state prison in Concord under a program that allowed him to conduct experiments with hallucinogenic substances, which he called "dealings". Leary stated that this is what he did as well as being paid by the prison, but the experiment didn't work out as well as he hoped. After experiencing many negative reactions from the people involved in his experiment, Leary decided to stop conducting these studies because he believed it might hurt other patients if word got out about them. He then became a lecturer in Berkeley where he introduced the people there to his new form of therapy known as "psycholytic therapy." This involved using low doses of psychedelic drugs in order to help people over the course of several sessions. He was met with success at the start, but later on he lost his position at Berkeley because he often came late to class after spending the night with various women. After leaving that post, Leary chose not to go back into academia and chose instead to focus on promoting psychedelic drugs mainly LSD. Leary next worked for a private research institute known as International Federation for Internal Freedom which carried out experiments for mind expansion involving psychedelic substances such as LSD and DMT.
